10 Times VWs Were More Than Just A Car

Having a Volkswagen is similar to the bond you share with Fido. Ok, maybe not JUST like that, but your VW is always there for you as you embark on a new adventure, like your favorite furry companion. You go and see things together, experience new places and make memories along the way. Our VW’s become more than just a car to us, they become a part of our life and our families. We mold them to fit our lifestyles and we customize them to make them our own. Though, you probably won’t understand the connection between a person and their VW unless you have had the privilege to own one yourself. Here are 10 times VW’s were more than just cars to us:

1. It’s easy to develop an appreciation for VW’s at a young age. Myself, I’ve been counting VW bugs in my sleep for as long as I can remember. Not really sure why, but this might be a clue…

*See below

2. Food trucks are all the rage, aren’t they? For some reason, food is just better when it comes out of a souped up vehicle. (Test: Can you spot a pun when you see one? Can ya?!) If you’re anything like the person who owns this VW, your car certainly means more to you than mere transportation, it’s an outlet to pursue your passion and make a living for yourself.

3. Volkswagens are more than just a car, they are a fashion statement and way of identification. I mean, how many different colored, customized Volkswagen whips have you seen out there? A TON. Its a VW thing. Plus, personalizing these bad boys makes finding your car after a day of shopping a breeze. Double whammy!

4. Did you ever think a Volkswagen would offer you words of encouragement? Probably not. But, yet again, this breed of car is showing us how to live a happier life. We’ve gotta give it up for a Volkswagen’s way of reminding us that “Life is good.”

5. Ok, listen. Clearly Volkswagens are near and dear to your heart if you’ve got a freakin’ VW toaster. No judgement. Personally, I have the waffle maker, mini fridge, microwave, and plate sets…If you own any sort of kitchen appliance resembling a Volkswagen, it’s become more than a car to you, it’s also a trusty cooking utensil. Gotta love V-Dub.

6.How ’bout all those times we’ve seen couples take really, really ridiculously cute engagement photos posed alongside their beloved VW? That VW is more than just a car, its part of their life, and when it’s long gone, they will always have these picture to remember it by!  Ahh, true love…

7. And sometimes we just can’t help it that we shape our breakfast foods like Volkswagen Beetles, ok? Why does everyone say its weird? It tastes better that way. With the Beetle always on your brain, it’s clear that VW is more than just a car to you, it’s a way of life.

8. Oh, and don’t tell me that you forgot about the Mystery Machine? Those are childhood memories, people! That can’t be replaced for all the money in the world! Volkswagens are definitely more than just a car. Case and point made purely on the grounds that Scooby Doo made the Volkswagen Van a lead role in the cartoons.

9. You’ve shared quite some romantic memories with your Volkswagen. You’ve driven it across the country or to the beach to watch the sunrise. Sometimes it’s just you and your VW. But there’s nothing wrong with that. You love that car because it’s more than just a VW, its your travel partner-in-crime.

10. When you wanted to get away, your VW never turned its back on you. Your constant travel companion, you could always depend on your VW to be your travel buddy. That’s why your Volkswagen continues to be more than just a car, its your ride or die partner in crime.

These are just a few of the ways we have seen Volkswagens transforms lives and become more than just a vehicle to their owners. And that makes us feel good.

VW Receives Nine 2011 “Top Safety Picks” from IIHS

News just released from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awards Volkswagen with the most “Top Safety Picks” for 2011 vehicles.

The Routan is the latest Volkswagen to earn the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) TOP SAFETY PICK rating for 2011, the highest possible from the non-profit safety research organization. This means that Volkswagen now has no fewer than nine TOP SAFETY PICKS, giving the brand leadership in the U.S. industry.

The annual rating recognizes those vehicles that perform best in protecting passengers in the Institute’s front, side, and rear crash test evaluations, and the newly required roof-strength test evaluations. The Institute only awards TOP SAFETY PICK ratings to vehicles that are fitted with electronic stability control and head protection airbags.
The other 2011 Volkswagen models to receive the IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK rating are: CC 2.0L TSI®, Jetta, Jetta SportWagen, Passat, Tiguan, Touareg, and four-door Golf and GTI models.

World Debut of Beetle R Concept Model

Just posted on the VW Newsroom website:

At Volkswagen, the letter “R” promises top-notch performance, a claim validated by the 266-hp Golf R and the 261-hp Scirocco R. In a world debut at the IAA in Frankfurt, Volkswagen is now showing a third variation of this sporty theme: the Beetle R Concept, based on the 21st Century Beetle. Like the Golf R and Scirocco R, the R version of the Beetle was also created at Volkswagen subsidiary Volkswagen R GmbH, located near Wolfsburg.

The Beetle R Concept is still a design study. Those who are familiar with the Beetle Turbo (200 hp) know that the car could offer even more performance, similar to that of the Golf R and Scirocco R.

Visually, the Beetle R Concept, painted in “Serious Grey”, offers a glimpse of what a production version might look like. The concept is equipped with 20-inch “Talladega” aluminum-alloy wheels—the same design used on the Golf R and Scirocco R, although those cars wear 18- and 19-inch rims. R-design blue brake calipers are easy to spot through the Beetle’s wheels, which feature five triple spokes.

As is usual on R models, the interior also makes an immediate impression. In the front, the driver and passenger sit in motorsport bucket seats with what are referred to as Ergopads made of gray nubuck leather. The seats are upholstered in black Nappa leather. The R logo is embossed on the seats and the seat seams and piping are in “Space Blue”.

VW Touareg Receives 2011 Motorist Choice Award

Notable automotive industry research companies, IntelliChoice and AutoPacific, today announced the 2011 Motorist Choice Awards. Now in its sixth year, this venerable award series is designed to recognize those vehicles that deliver the compelling combination of high consumer satisfaction and lower-than-expected ownership costs over time.  This year, IntelliChoice and AutoPacific continued categorizing the winners into a collection of 15 popular lifestyle segments that shoppers could easily identify with.

Volkswagen took home the High Tech award with the Volkswagen Touareg.

“The Motorist Choice Awards are designed to assist consumers by using a categorization scheme other than traditional vehicle classes. Our research has shown that buyers often shop in more than one vehicle segment based on their needs and uses, rather than simply choosing a segment and then comparing models within it,” said George Peterson, president of AutoPacific.

Each year, AutoPacific performs the broadest and most widely followed owner satisfaction survey in the U.S. with a record of over 72,000 responses in 2011. This study solicits consumer feedback on a recently purchased 2011 vehicle using 48 key attributes covering the entire ownership experience. From these data, AutoPacific compares overall buyer satisfaction between individual models and vehicle classes and announces its annual Vehicle Satisfaction Awards (VSAs) based on the findings.

Meanwhile, IntelliChoice constantly monitors and adjusts cost of ownership metrics for over 1,800 model trim lines to provide consumers with valuable insight into the financial impact of ownership over a five year time horizon.  This analysis is the foundation of the IntelliChoice Best Overall Value of the Year (BOVY) awards announced each January, and its interim Best Bets awards which were recently announced for the upcoming 2012 model year.

The Touareg Proves To Be The Best Diesel Vehicle

The Detroit News took the 2011 Volkswagen Touareg TDI out for a spin and find that this SUV may be the best way to get Americans into diesels.

It combines a big SUV with good fuel economy like few other vehicles, while maintaining its European sophistication. The 3-liter V-6 in the Touareg creates 406 pound-feet of torque and 225 horsepower. It continues to get aggressive acceleration despite a decrease in overall weight of the vehicle.

The EPA estimates fuel economy at 19 mpg city and 28 mpg highway. The ride is quiet and smooth, and the Touareg feels more like a Mercedes than a Volkswagen.

VW uses two video screens to help the driver. Between the speedometer and tachometer is a 7-inch display screen that provides vehicle information and turn-by-turn navigation information.

An 8-inch navigation screen provides nearly as much information at the top of the center stack with an extremely clear picture and 3-D mapping for the navigation system. This map includes some 3-D landmarks.

There are also all of the bells and whistles, such as Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free cellphone operation, an optional giant panoramic sunroof that reaches all the way into the second row, and an extremely comfortable interior for all five passengers.

David Maus Volkswagen Showcases Top Safety Pick Winners

Volkswagen named a front runner in Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ?IIHS? Top Safety Pick Award for 2011 with 9 winner s that performed well in front, side, rollover, and rear crashed based on available electronic stability control – a crash avoidance feature that significantly reduces crash risk.

One of the stand-out vehicles for Volkswagen is the new designed Touareg which was the only large SUV to earn the Top Safety Pick in that category for 2011. The Institute does not normally evaluate SUV?s of this size but Volkswagen requested crash tests to demonstrate the Touareg?s crashworthiness, establishing it as a winner.

In the last year IIHS has toughened the criteria for all qualifiers by requiring vehicles to earn a good rating for performance in roof strength to assess protection in a rollover crash. The outlook for side-impact protection has increased as well, in part because of the stronger side structures and standard side airbags not in protection of new vehicles to protect the head and torso.

The winners include:
Small cars: Volkswagen Golf, Volkswagen GTI
Midsize Cars: Volkswagen Jetta Sedan*, Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen
Small SUV: Volkswagen Tiguan
Large SUV: Volkswagen Touareg*

*Indicates New 2011 Winners
